Oslo has seen many cafés with birds in their logos (such as Fuglen, Pust and Papegøye), but one of the latest newcomers draws its inspiration from tropical rainforests. Located inside Nordstrand Kulturarena (Nordstrand Cultural Centre), Lovinda Kafé & Bar opened its doors in August 2025.

This location has witnessed many attempts to establish a neighbourhood café. Almost a year ago, Iva Kastelec, a sourdough baker, teamed up with chef Thea Marie Fongaard to open a French bistro that doubled as a café and bakery during the day, only to shut down in June 2025.

Bakeriet ved Credo

In Oslo’s café and bakery scene, the opening of Bakeriet ved Credo (Credo Bakery) by late autumn 2025 is a landscape-changing event. This is one of the chain reactions triggered when Heidi Bjerkan, arguably Norway’s most renowned chef, decided to move her Michelin-starred restaurant, Credo, from Trondheim to the Norwegian capital.

Born in 1970 in Trondheim, Bjerkan has a stellar career behind her. Despite her youthful dream of becoming a pilot, Bjerkan was quickly attracted to the high-paced restaurant business. After becoming a professional chef, she worked in a series of renowned restaurants, including Claridge’s in London and the cruise ship Queen Elizabeth .

Climbing Carp, Rising Dragon: The Secret of Tenryu-ji's Garden

Out of all the temples in Kyoto’s Arashiyama area, Tenryu-ji (天龍寺, Temple of the Heavenly Dragon) is arguably the most prestigious. Built on the original location of Japan’s first Zen temple, it was completed in 1345. Upon completion, it was immediately recognised as a masterpiece of Japanese Zen garden design and was designated the top of Kyoto’s five major Zen temples—a ranking it maintains to this day.

Over the years, Tenryu-ji has suffered eight major fires. The temple we see today is the result of reconstruction in 1934. Yet in spite of the destruction, it has preserved its essence, largely thanks to the outstanding design of its founding abbot Muso Soseki (夢窓疎石, 1275—1351), one of the most eminent Zen masters of his time.

Best Fastelavnsboller (Semla) in Oslo (2026)

For Oslo bakeries, Fastelavn is a weekend of war. This year, we tried six different shops — given the limited time and resources (including our BMI — you know, this is a bolle one eats before the fasting season), we could only visit the shops we found most interesting. Understandably, there are many other shops we would also love to try — that will be the task for 2027.

Needless to say, the following ranking reflects only our preferences. We would like to point out that, in addition to taste, flavours and ingredients, we also took accessibility and prices into consideration. As you will see, in order to strike a balance, we tried both bakeries in the city centre and a couple further away from the centre.

Located on the northwestern outskirts of Kyoto, Arashiyama (嵐山) has been famed for its natural landscapes and cultural heritage since the Heian period (794–1185). Flanked by the Katsura River to the southwest, it is home to numerous temples such as Tenryu-ji (天龍寺, Temple of the Heavenly Dragon), as well as natural landmarks including the bamboo groves and Togetsukyo Bridge (渡月橋, Moon Crossing Bridge). Once among the most popular retreats for the Japanese aristocracy, Arashiyama remains today one of the busiest destinations for visitors from around the world.

As people in Oslo brace for one of the hottest summers in recent years, the city’s cafés are bursting with ideas and creativity in crafting their summer menus. Some are sticking to their signature summer drinks, which have already become classics in the collective memory, while others have come up with new ideas and completely broadened the horizon of the city’s café scene. The following are five places this summer offering the most outstanding summer drinks in Oslo.

Papegøye, originally named “Neongrut”, is an all-vegan cafè in the day and a wine bar in the evening. Papegøye means “parrot” in Norwegian, a bird that can “speak many languages and gather all sorts of colours” and it will best represent the customers and shop, according to the owners. Hence the name change.

Located at the heart of Tøyen, the café features a rustic interior design on the verge of urban ruin, with a large naked brick wall running behind the service counter, vintage furniture and green plants. Thanks to the high-ceiling and carefully matched Ikea lamps, the space feels airy and bright.

With an area of 8 sq.m, Kiosk! is arguably the smallest coffee bar in Oslo. Located inside a renovated petrol station from 1935, the mini-coffee bar features a dashing bright turquoise blue strip wrapped around its roof, adding a touch of lively cheerfulness to the whole neighbourhood.

With its grand opening celebrated only 3 days prior to our visit, this café could hardly be any newer. Located at the border of Sagene and Grünerløkka, only a few minutes walk away from Alexander Kiellands plass, Hernández has everything of a chill yet well-groomed neighbourhood bakery.

When in Beijing, one is spoiled for choice with restaurants serving the famous Beijing roasted duck. Quanjude (全聚德), for example, is a well-established brand with many locations across the city, though it seems to have become a bit out of touch with the younger generation. Da Dong (大董), with an impressive 160-page menu full of duck dishes, has earned a Michelin star—which also means its prices can be higher than many others.

Fuglen opened its first shop in Tokyo’s Shibuya district in 2012. By fusing Norwegian vintage furniture design with coffee, it managed to create a distinctive identity and quickly became one of the most popular cafés in the city. On our last day in Japan, we decided to pay them a visit.

Today, Fuglen has five shops in Tokyo alone, including a roastery that roasts beans for other Fuglen shops across Asia: one in Fukuoka, one in Seoul, and one in Jakarta. Out of the five shops, we chose the Sangubashi (参宮橋) location.

In Oslo’s café scene, Fuglen’s story is a legend that has been told a thousand times. It was one of the forerunners of the third-wave coffee movement, and it remains a proud Scandinavian coffee representative with true international influence. Today, it is still one of the most popular cafés and roasteries in Oslo and Tokyo—arguably two of the world’s most important coffee cities.

Imagine a forest. Then a river, meandering through it with a steady stream throughout the year. Sitting on a gentle slope high on the riverbank is a three-storey red-brick building, its middle floor home to a café and bar, with its chimney rising above the trees. Better still—a few steps further up the slope, there’s a sauna, large enough to seat 14 people at once. Through the sauna’s wide window, you can watch snowflakes drift in the still winter air, and in summer, the gentle breeze ripple through the lush green leaves. This is Kruttverket.

A good neighbourhood café takes many forms. Dapper Bar, a stone’s throw from Grünerløkka’s bustling Olaf Ryes plass, combines a fashion shop, café, and wine bar in one.

Starting out as a fashion boutique offering clothing, accessories, and apothecary products, Dapper has since expanded into a broader lifestyle brand that includes a bistro in Oslo’s vibrant Bjørvika district, as well as this café-bar.

Oslo does not lack laptop-friendly cafés—but some are friendlier than others. Pust (meaning “breath” in Norwegian), located by the bustling Majorstuen subway station—a major transit hub in Oslo’s affluent western district—is one of the most popular spots for those looking to settle in with a book or get some work done on their laptops.

Thanks to its close proximity to the University of Oslo’s main campus, the café quickly became a favourite meeting place for students when it opened its doors back in 2016. The interior follows a classic urban-industrial aesthetic, with factory-high ceilings that enhance the sense of airiness and space. At the far end of the large inner room, three rows of wooden staircase seating invite even larger groups to gather. In summer, when the weather is kind, guests can also choose to sit outdoors in the café’s spacious backyard.

Babbo Collective Olaf Ryes, the latest addition to the growing chain, made its debut today. Originally envisioned as Pasta Baby, a standalone Italian bistro, the newly opened café-restaurant has been folded into the Babbo Collective identity. “For the moment, I just want to focus on the Babbo Collective brand. The essence remains the same: we’ll still be making hand-rolled pasta here,” co-founder Lennart Pedersen told us.

Fåbro gård, despite its location in Lilleaker—far out on the city’s western side, has garnered massive attention on social media for offering “Oslo’s best buns”.

Croissant, pain au chocolat, pain suisse—it’s hard to imagine a city’s café scenes without the French pastries. It’s even harder to imagine a European city without any French pâtisseries. Encore, located on the edge bewteen St. Hanshaugen and Majorstuen, is exactly such a place in Oslo where you can find all kinds of exquisite French gâteaux and pastries.

The Frenchman behind Encore is Théo Romer, who came to Oslo in 2015 for a job at Sebastien Bruno, a high-end chocolate chain named after one of the two owners. At that time, Romer was only 19 years old, at his last year of the pastry chef education in France, where he specialised in chocolate. Looking back today, chocolate has been the magical ingredient that played a central role throughout his career.

For a world-renowed café such as Supreme Roastworks, it is almost hard to believe that everything can be so simple. The interior is designed in the utmost minimalistic style: white walls, black furniture, surrounded by wooden benches against the wall and counter seating facing large glass windows.

All milk-based coffee drinks are served in simple drinking glasses, while the hand-brews come in Hario glass servers and ceramic coffee cups. Yet this is how far the facade of simplicity goes: once you take a sip of the coffee, you immediately understand why this is one of best cafés in Oslo.

The charm of geometry is hard to resist—this is probably the feeling of most people when they step into Jorda Rundt (meaning “around the world” in Norwegian) café for the first time. Housed inside the historically significant “Rondellen” (meaning “the roundel” in Norwegian) building by the entrance of Oslo’s Aker Hospital, the café’s seating area is arranged along the circumference of a perfect circle. Constructed in the 1960s and originally used as a guard station and flower shop, the building was put on the historical preservation list by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage in 2012. It was designed by the famous Norwegian architect firm Morseth & Wiel Gedde.

When Farine (meaning “flour” in French) took over the yellow building at the heart of Eastern Oslo’s Kampen area, everything felt right. The building was originally built by a baker in 1878, where he produced bread in the basement while keeping his horses in the stable in the back. After a big fire accident in the area in 1879, the building was purchased by the Norwegian state. Today, it is included in the Kampen preservation zone by the city’s cultural heritage management office (Byantikvaren i Oslo).

Tucked away in a quiet yard shielded by a brick wall, Håndbakt (meaning “hand-baked” in Norwegian) is located on the ground floor of Factory Tøyen, a coworking space. When the bakery opened its doors in September 2021, it was the first plant-based micro bakery in the whole Norway. Today, it has become one of the most popular brunch/coffee places in Eastern Oslo.

The red brick building that houses the bakery is a renovated factory building that dates back to 1911. Echoing the building’s historical atmosphere, the bakery’s interior is decorated in a modern industrial style, with wires and steel pipes running across the ceiling, and naked red brick walls complimented by broad-leaved plants. Thanks to the high ceiling, large windows and dimmed lighting, the space conveys a sense of airy openness, and at same time exudes a welcoming warmth of comfort.

Frida, the much-anticipated bakery owned by the Babbo Collective brand chain, opened today. Located next to the brand’s Restaurant Bente in Torshov area, the bakery was originally set to open in August 2024, but was delayed because of “power supply issues” until mid-Feburary, said Alexandra Ek, one of the three main Babbo Collective owners.

We arrived at the shop at 07:40 in the morning, and there were already 5 people sitting at the tables waiting. The staff were scurrying around, trying to put a finishing touch on everything, and the kitchen eventually started serving at 8:00. Within 10 minutes, the shop was overflowing with people.

Few names in Oslo’s bakery circle can invoke as much respect and awe as Ille Brød. Established in 2015 in a home kitchen in Western Oslo’s Bygdøy area, under the name “Bygdøy surdeigsbakeri” (“Bygdøy sourdough bakery”), the half-serious-half-hobby micro-bakery gradually took shape, and eventually in 2017 moved into a proper production facility on Lakkegata, where the shop is still located today.

The two founders, Martin Fjeld og Casper Lugg, are both from Fredrikstad, a city roughly 90 km south of Oslo. In their dialect, «ille bra» (which can be loosely translated as “awfully good”) is a phrase commonly used to describe something particularly good. Jokingly, the two young bakers started to refer to their particularly successful bread as «ille brød» (something to the effect of “awfully (good) bread”). Hence the bakery’s name.

The original plan, according to Thoresen’s interviews with local newspapers, was that the coffee bar should serve as the front to his architecture studio. Yet Thoresen got so fascinated by the coffee business and went on to win a string of illustrious coffee-related titles including the first edition of the World Barista Championship in Morocco in 2000.

Inside, the shop looks quite different from Mitte’s typical minimalistic café décor, with Persian rugs covering the floor and Islamic tiles on the wall, emphasising its ethnic identity and arabic flavour.

I ordered a caffè latte and J had a handbrew, and we were both super happy. With its slightly dark flavour and smoked fragrance, I think it was one of the best caffè lattes I have had throughout my trips around Europe, and J thought the handbrew was equally good. If you intend to find an equivalent place in Oslo, I can only compare Ben Rahim to Tim Wendelboe. When it comes to the caffè latte, I think Ben Rahim is a clear cut above Supreme Roastworks. Mind you, the latte cost 6 euros while the handbrew 9 euros for half a liter. It was on the pricy side, but we both thought it was worth the money.

Despite the rising popularity of cardamom buns (“kardemommebolle” in Norwegian) and other newcomers over the past decade, the cinnamon bun (“kanelbolle” or “kanelsurr”) retains its dominate position among the Scandinavian pastries.

For most Scandinavians, the cinnamon bun is not just a traditional pastry for the afternoon tea break (“fika” as they say in Sweden), but also a symbol of leisure and unconditional happiness deeply rooted in memories since childhood.

In 1999, the first Cinnamon Bun Day (“Kanelbollens dag”) was instituted by the Swedish Home Baking Council (Hembakningsrådet) on October 4th to celebrate and promote the pastry. Since then, the Cinnamon Bun Day has become an annual theme day across the whole Nordic region. Following is our list of the best cinnamon buns you can find in Oslo:

Since its opening in April 2020 during the covid pandemic, Kveitemjøl (meaning “wheat flour” in Norwegian) has quickly become one of the most popular bakeries in Oslo. Its location at Aker Brygge, the bustling commercial and shopping centre by Oslo harbour, certainly helped. More important is the man behind it all: Nils Olav Heggdalsvik, a veteran baker who used to be on the Norwegian national baking team.

Hakone (箱根) region in Japan, thanks to its abundant geothermal resources, is usually associated with Onsen (温泉), the traditional Japanese style hot spring baths. In Oslo, however, people name their coffee shops after it.

The reason, said Camilla Inanda Svanberg, one of the Hakone Coffee’s founders, is to evoke fond memories people attach to the healing effects of such places and, in this way, remind them that “to buy coffee is to buy well-being”, according to her interviews with Norwegian media.

Very few new places attract as much attention as Lut/Laget. Located in Clemenskvartalet, part of the latest developmment in Bjørvika, Lut/Laget is many things at once: a two-storied French style brasserie (their interior decoration features an Eiffel tower), a bar, a bakery backed by Åpent Bakeri and a pizza restaurant as part of the Lofthus Samvirkelag.

The name Lut/Laget, originally meaning “joint-stock company” in Norwegian, emphasises this multi-faced cooperation between Lofthus Samvirkelag and Åpent Bakeri. But the collaboration behind Lut/Laget goes much deeper. The pastry chef Diana Elizondo used to work at Maaemo, whereas the bistro chef Martin Gnecco is from restaurant Panu—and they are a couple.

Tim Wendelboe is, to a certain degree, the coffee shop that has single-handedly put Oslo on the world’s coffee map. The owner, after whom the shop was named, started his career working as a barista at Stockfleths, a well-known Oslo chain, in 1998 and won the 2004 World Barista Championship. He left Stockfleths three years later and opened his own shop in Grüners gate 1. Wendelboe has since won multiple world championships in roasting and is one of the best-known front figures of the third-wave coffee in the whole Scandinavian region. Today, the shop attracts hundreds of tourists from all over the world every day.

Havens Kafé

About 10 minutes walk from Majorstuen subway station and camouflaged by idyllic greenery, Havens Kafé lies at the heart of the affluent neighbourhood Fagenborg. The location has witnessed several attempts to establish a neighbourhood café, and Havens is the latest one since 2023.

    <img loading="lazy" src="images/_DSF3327.jpg#center"

The space inside the café is fairly compact, with only four window counter seats and a tiny table occupying the centre of the room. Interior was decorated in a simple, elegant retro-style. We came to the café on a sunny Saturday morning. There was a group of elderly ladies sitting in the corner, chatting over their morning coffee, a mother with her son sitting next to us by the window. More people chose to take their seats outside in the small garden. Some of them came for a coffee and some pastries after jogging. Some were still in their morning routines reading the newspaper over their brunch. This is clearly a café geared towards people living in the neighbourhood.

Never heard of Skullerud in southeast Oslo? Now you have a reason to. Thirty minutes away from Oslo Central Station by subway, the neighbourhood is home to Oslo Klatresenter, one of Norway’s largest climbing gyms.

    <img loading="lazy" src="images/_DSF3371.jpg#center"

Located in the climbing gym’s foyer is Tid Bakeri, which translates as ‘Time Bakery’ in English. The bakery was started single-handedly by Robin Nordbotten as some sort of climbing boys’ club, with its three jaunty climbers scurrying behind the counter. A few years ago, Robin brought in Katerina Soukupova, a veteran baker from arguably Oslo’s best-renowned sourdough bakery Ille Brød, who has lent the place a somewhat female and delicate touch.

Lille Oslo Kaffebrenneri (“Lille Oslo”) in English translates to “Little Oslo Coffee Roastery”, and is one of the latest additions to the bustling neighborhood Grünerløkka. The roastery started out as an attachment to the popular donut bakery “My Ugly Baby” at Youngstorget, which went out of business in 2023. It then branched out as an independent café and moved to its current location at the south end of Markveien, a 1 km long street full of shops, cafés, bars, and restaurants.

La Maison, despite its high-quality and price, started as a neighbourhood bakery at Paul-Lincke-Ufer 17 in Kreuzberg. In October 2023, they opened a high-end boutique not far away but more accessible by subway at Urbanstraße 70A.

In constrast to the old shop that features a shabby chic décor, the new one has a modern and minimalistic interior design, with large bright glass doors and windows, open space, as well as a natural wood colour palette.
