As people in Oslo brace for one of the hottest summers in recent years, the city’s cafés are bursting with ideas and creativity in crafting their summer menus. Some are sticking to their signature summer drinks, which have already become classics in the collective memory, while others have come up with new ideas and completely broadened the horizon of the city’s café scene. The following are five places this summer offering the most outstanding summer drinks in Oslo.

5. Tim Wendelboe

Cappuccino Al Freddo

Nothing new, nothing fancy, yet nothing can really beat a Cappuccino Al Freddo from Tim Wendelboe. For first-time visitors to Oslo in summer, look no further—Tim Wendelboe is by all means where you should start your coffee tour, and we can promise you their Cappuccino Al Freddo is the drink you came all this way for. For those living in the city, do we still need to say more about this classic mix of espresso, sugar, ice cubes, and Røros milk, served in a cocktail glass?

4. Supreme Roastworks

“Satans god iskaffe” (in English: Damn good iced coffee)

Supreme Roastworks, another OG in the Oslo café scene, is going strong this summer with their classic “Satans” iced coffee (65 NOK). It’s a cold brew mixed with rose lemonade, resulting in a refreshingly acidic coffee drink. We’ve tried this kind of cold brew in many different places across the city, and yet it’s difficult to find another place that strikes such a perfect balance between the coffee and the lemonade, elevating something so simple to such a sophisticated level. “Satans” in Norwegian is a casual exclamatory word, something like “Holy moly!”, yet with an association to the word “Satan.” It is indeed heavenly good and devilishly addictive.

3. Hernández

Sparkling orange matcha

Hernández is now one of the city’s most popular cake shops thanks to their famous Basque cheesecakes. Yet many people still don’t know that they serve some of Oslo’s best matcha drinks. If you’ve yet to catch on to the tea craze, their sparkling orange matcha (85 NOK) on this year’s summer menu offers an excellent introduction. In addition, their summer menu features two hojicha drinks. Hojicha, a roasted green tea, is known for its mellow, nutty fragrance and low caffeine content. The peanut hojicha latte (85 NOK) at Hernández is, without doubt, one of the best hojicha drinks we’ve found in Oslo. Chunks of peanut pair perfectly with hojicha’s natural nuttiness, while the ice tempers any lingering bitterness. The main barista, Natalia, is responsible for developing the drinks, and that’s no small feat. Each of these drinks stands out on its own yet also complements the varied flavours of the cheesecakes.

2. Kiosk!

Mappliato

Mappliato

With temperatures hovering above 22 degrees on average, this is the perfect time of year to visit Kiosk! in Oslo. This former petrol station turned mini coffee bar makes full use of its generous outdoor seating. At the top of the menu is the Mappliato (69 NOK), an iced coffee made with espresso, oat milk, maple syrup, and a subtle but surprising twist—miso, the traditional Japanese seasoning. The miso lends a faintly salty, fermented umami base, which gives way to the mellow, fragrant blend of coffee and oat milk. It’s easily one of the most intriguing iced coffees we’ve tried in Oslo this summer.

Cherry coffee soda

For something fruitier and more refreshing, try the Cherry Coffee Soda (69 NOK), made with filtered cold coffee, a homemade “cherry coke” syrup, and sparkling water. The result is a light, fizzy drink with a natural fruitiness—thanks to the syrup, which is crafted entirely from scratch by barista Iku.

Hibiscus iced tea

Unlike many cafés in Oslo, Kiosk!’s summer menu includes both low-caffeine and caffeine-free options. Their decaf cold brew, made with beans from Jacu Roastery, is available in limited quantities daily. There’s also hibiscus iced tea (50 NOK). Both are popular and worth trying.

1. Papegøye

Feaminn

Feaminn

Sitting at the centre of Tøyen, this bright, flamingo-pink-themed coffee bar convinced us of its originality and versatility with its summer menu this year. The “Feaminn” (76 NOK), a coffee beverage made by mixing iced filter coffee with seaweed, lemon, and tonic, is arguably one of the most creative iced coffee drinks we’ve found in the city so far. The lemon and seaweed form a slightly acidic base with a strong umami flavour—almost reminiscent of green tea—while the tonic adds a refreshing touch of fizziness. The result is an iced coffee with several layers, each sip accentuating a different flavour and aroma.

The Wasp

The Wasp (76 NOK), made with iced espresso and orange juice, is another must-try. Compared with the Feaminn, it places greater emphasis on bright, fruity acidity. Moreover, both their espresso tonic (76 NOK) and the AffOatgato (espresso with Oatly ice cream, 76 NOK) taste better than at most cafés in the city. All in all, given the extensiveness and originality of their menu, Papegøye remains one of Oslo’s most exciting cafés this summer.
